Passing identity verification doesn't rule out a further request: Binance may still ask your account to complete Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD). In this step you declare whether you are, or are connected to, a politically exposed person, explain your source of funds and your source of wealth, and upload proof for each source you select. If the request comes, log in yourself and deal with it from [Account] - [Identification].
Why Binance asks for EDD after you pass identity verification
Binance describes EDD as an advanced verification process meant to keep accounts fully aligned with regulatory requirements and compliance standards, and its Help Center has a dedicated article, How to Complete Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) Verification on Binance? Its reason for asking accounts that are already verified: the extra information collected along the way helps bring the account in line with the latest regulatory and security standards, and gives the platform the information it needs to reduce potential risks.
The source-of-funds and source-of-wealth checks rest on anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) regulations. To comply with them and with industry best practice, the platform needs to understand where the assets or money in your account come from. The details are in Binance's guide to verifying source of wealth and source of funds.
EDD is a process Binance may request. Whether you need to go through it depends on whether the request appears in your account after you log in.
EDD and a request for information (RFI) start from different places. An RFI is used, for example, to collect necessary and up-to-date identity information or to look into unusual activity on an account, and you start it from the button in the banner at the top of the page once you're logged in; EDD goes through [Account] - [Identification]. Check which of the two your account is showing, then use the matching entry point.
If an account doesn't cooperate, some features or services may be restricted or even become temporarily unavailable until verification is complete.
What EDD asks you to declare and explain
Politically exposed person (PEP) declaration: you confirm whether you, your relatives or your close associates hold or have held a prominent public position, such as a senior government official or a high-ranking executive of a state-owned enterprise, along with their immediate family members and close associates. Answer this one truthfully.
Source of funds (SOF): where the money you have deposited, or plan to deposit, into the account comes from, such as salary, savings or the proceeds of selling an asset. If you haven't deposited anything yet but are asked to prove your source of funds, describe the activities you will use to build up the money you plan to deposit later.
Source of wealth (SOW): how your total accumulated assets came about, such as employment income, business profits, investments, an inheritance or real estate. Traditional and crypto holdings both count.
Students, the self-employed and people living on savings submit different documents
| Your situation | Documents you can submit | What the documents must show |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employed | Any one of: your most recent tax statement; a bank statement; a business registration document (marked optional) | The bank statement shows your full name and the income payments and is dated within the last 3 months |
| Student | Valid documents for the sources of funds and wealth you selected, for example a bank statement showing your allowance or any employment income (if applicable) | Follow the document requirements for the sources you selected |
| Unemployed for a while and living on savings | A bank statement to show your savings | Dated within the last 3 months, showing your full name and the savings balance |
| Employed on a salary | Payslips, a signed employment letter, a tax statement, a bank statement | Payslips cover the most recent 3 months (or the last 3 pay periods if you are paid weekly or biweekly) and show your name and your employer's name; the employment letter is dated within the last 3 months, issued on company letterhead and signed by an authorized representative; the bank statement covers the most recent 3 months and shows the salary credits |
Self-employment counts as employment income. If you submit an employment letter as a self-employed person, it has to be signed by an independent third party such as an external accountant or bookkeeper.
If your wealth comes from an inheritance or a gift, you can submit documents such as a tax statement, a will or testament, or a distribution statement; the will and the distribution statement must be certified by a lawyer or notary and marked as a "True Certified Copy". These inheritance documents only explain where your own wealth came from. Claiming the assets in a family member's account after they die is a separate process, the inheritance appeal covered in how to claim a family member's Binance assets.
Whichever source you choose, the documents have to meet these conditions:
- Issued in your name, matching the name on the account.
- Clearly showing your full name, the issuing authority's logo and the date of issue; all four corners visible, with no cropping, blurring or filters. A 300 DPI resolution is required.
- In a non-editable format, and only PDF, JPG or PNG; Excel or Word files are generally rejected.
- Reflecting recent financial activity, such as payslips from the last 3 months or tax filings for the most recent year.
- Original PDFs preferred; a screenshot is accepted only if it shows the full page, including the URL, your name or your company's name, and the date.
A document type that doesn't meet these requirements can't be used for the application, and once uploaded it won't let you proceed. Before uploading, check your files against this list and against the requirements for the source you picked.
Where to submit EDD and how long review takes
- Log in to your account. On the website, hover over the profile icon and go to [Account] - [Identification].
- Select [Verify Now]. Don't refresh the browser while you are going through it.
- Follow the page to make the PEP declaration, select your sources of funds and wealth, and upload documents for each source.
Binance says review usually takes up to 3-10 business days, and the time can vary with how complex the case is and how complete the documents are; resubmissions or requests for more material can make it longer. If anything else is needed after you submit, the platform will contact you.
When an email, text message or phone call mentions EDD, don't upload documents through a link in that message. Log in yourself on the Binance website whose domain you have checked or in the app, and look under [Identification] for anything pending.
Keep your own copy of the payslips and statements you send
Payslips and bank statements carry your income and your bank account details. Keep a local copy of every file you submit, so that if you are asked for more or need to resubmit, you can tell exactly which version went in.
This explains the process only and is not legal advice. This site doesn't complete verification on your behalf and will never ask for your ID, payslips, verification codes, private keys or seed phrase.
When an EDD document upload gets stuck
How do I continue an EDD application if I don't have any of the listed documents?
Tap [Can't provide this document?], then tap [pick a source] in the pop-up window. That takes you back to the source selection page, where you choose a different source of funds that applies to you, and the system then takes you to the document submission page for that source. The application only moves forward once every selected source has a valid document.
What should I do if my EDD upload keeps saying verification failed?
When a red banner appears below a file, tap the file name to see what the problem is; for a file that wasn't accepted, tap [Upload again] or [Try again] and use a different one. If the verification failed message keeps coming back, you can tap the retry icon and choose [Start over], but this clears everything you uploaded before; or tap [Keep editing] to return to the upload page. If neither works, tap the headphones icon to contact Customer Support and include a screenshot of the message.
Is it safe to give Binance my payslip?
Binance says the personal information and documents you submit are protected with strong encryption and security measures, under physical, electronic and procedural safeguards. That is the platform's own commitment. For how the data is stored and used once you hand it over, read the platform's Privacy Notice.
